Seeing the Unseeable
Let's face it: Things have been getting weirder for a while now ...
I didn’t get around to doing the audiobook version of The Healthy Deviant until a year after the print version came out (free subscribers, free preview here; paid subscribers, you’ll find the entirety of Chapter 2, “Seeing the Unseeable,” and other goodies below).
I began recording the narration in my backyard studio on January 6th, 2021, which you might recall was a VERY big news day. 🤯
From early morning, though, I was camped out in a quilt fort in my backyard studio, recording with my equally unplugged audio engineer, so I didn’t hear about the goings-on at the Capitol until much later in the day.
When I did, I thought: Wow, our young democracy is facing a real test here.
Then I thought: Man, this society’s wheels are really starting to rattle. 😬
Let’s face it: Things have been getting weirder for a while now.
And really, is it any wonder?
It’s easy to forget that the way we are living now is essentially an untested, unprecedented experiment — one never before tried in 2.5 million years of human history (I’ll be sharing more on that and the nature of evolutionary mismatch in upcoming posts).
Right now, too many people are operating on inflammatory fumes, fueled mostly on sugar, fear, and outrage.
In my book, I note that the unhealthy-to-healthy ratio in the U.S. is currently running about a hundred to one. And until we start fixing up our own body-minds, I don’t see how we can hope to fix much else.
I’m not saying that we should forget about the world “out there” and focus exclusively on our own personal well-being.
I’m just saying that we aren’t going to be able to rise to the bigger problems our world is facing without a bunch of higher-functioning folks first reclaiming their mojo, and then putting their best gifts and talents to work on behalf of the world we all share.
Because at present …
And we are all feeling the hurt.
While Healthy Deviance is not the cure to every societal ailment, I think it can go a long way to creating a more stable and humane culture — ideally one that is not just sustainable but regenerative.
So let’s get on that, shall we?
To regenerate our personal vitality, we first have to stop tearing it down.
In the +Depth Charge post I sent you last week, I offered an overview of what I call the “Vicious Cycle of the Unhealthy Default Reality.” I explained why it is that so many people wind up in an inflamed, desperate, disempowered and reactionary state.
I also presented a quick look at my “Virtuous Cycle of Healthy Deviance.”
In other videos within my Healthy Deviant U experience (including the one I’ve linked to below), I go deeper into that cycle and the radically better way of life it can help us create. I’m excited to share more of that as we roll.
Ready to start taking some action now?
Here’s where I’d suggest you begin: The Nonconformist Competencies.
These three Nonconformist Competencies are your escape hatch from the Vicious Cycle of the Unhealthy Default Reality and your entry point to the Virtuous Cycle of Healthy Deviance.
Here’s a little video where I walk you through them … 👇
